25th Southampton (Northam) Sea Scout Group

A Quick tour of our Headquarters
(mainly for prospective hall users)

Our Headquarters, known as SSS Enterprise, is at Crosshouse Hard, Crosshouse Road, Southampton; we are almost under the Itchen Bridge and quite close to Ocean Village. It is immediately adjacent to a (free) public boat launching hard onto the River Itchen and a public car park. Our neighbours are mainly other boating clubs; there is no residential accommodation within earshot and there is also normally no late-night noise from other sources. Our building and compound can be clearly seen in Aerial Photographs; we are the blue-roofed building and grassy area.
Current regular uses of our facilities include a canoe club and several Scout Groups for weekend residential activities. We are keen to attract additional users; please contact Graham Meering (below) in the first instance.
The Headquarters compound is about ten minutes walk over the Itchen Bridge from Woolston railway station which has trains to Portsmouth. There are several bus services over the bridge. It is also about ten minutes on foot from the Ocean Village or St Mary's Street shops and about twenty minutes from Southampton city centre shops. The nearest substantial public open (green) space is Peartree Green, next to Woolston Station. Mayflower Park is a similar distance in the opposite direction. The new Southampton football stadium is less than 1km up the road and Southampton Hall of Aviation and SS Shieldhall are even nearer.
Our site consists of a secure compound 45m by 23m containing a concreted car park for about twelve vehicles, a 17m by 9m grass activity area, a boat workshop and storage garages and our main headquarters building. It is immediately adjacent to a  public hard which can be used at almost any state of the tide. Canoes can also be launched directly from the gravel beach behind the Headquarters, to which we have direct access through a gate in our compound. Basic sailing is fine immediately around the hard and above the bridge; a more exciting time can be had off Weston, Relatively sheltered canoeing can be found upriver for 6km to Woodmill, while the more ambitious may paddle down to the Hamble or (with care) across to Hythe.
The main building includes a carpeted hall 7m by 12m, separate changing and toilet facilities for males and females, and a kitchen equipped with a modern electric cooker, microwave and refrigerator. Heating is by wall-mounted electric fan heaters and hot water is by electric immersion heater with an additional water heater in the kitchen. Both changing rooms have hot showers.

It will not normally be possible to book the Hall during school term at times which conflict with our own regular meetings:

New members, boys and girls, are very welcome in all four sections.
